This variable workshop is for the farmer, hunter, trapper, or anyone interested in utilizing hides of their own. I come to you with my equipment and tools, and we tan hides.
Rawhide is more than it seems. This stiff, preserved hide has been through some stages of the tanning process but is caught between worlds, ready to be tanned in any method or left on its own to make containers or drums.
Bark-tanning is a unique hide tanning method which uses the tannins in plant material to transform animals skins – whether land mammal or marine life.
November 3 & 4, 2018. This 2-day workshop on alum-tawing creates resilient sheepskin rugs for home use. Alum is a natural constituent found in many soils, and the tawing method is a soaking method that produces bright white leather.
January 25-27, 2019. This 3-day workshop (with 2-day weekend option) is on the classical method of smoke-tanning, the world’s oldest hide tanning technique. Smoke-tanning is the most widespread method, being phenomenally pioneered worldwide in the same epoch as bowmaking.
